Nov. 26, 2008, as heavily armed Pakistani terrorists raced to infiltrate the five-star Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and other tourist sites in Mumbai in a spectacular coordinated attack, the hotel’s executive chef, Hemant Oberoi, feared he was falling behind.

Very poor young men carried out these attacks, spurred to jihad by members of the Pakistani-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. “These were landlocked boys,” the authors write, “from impoverished rural communities, who knew only about chickens and goats.” In death, they were promised eternal glory: “Your faces will glow like the moon. Your bodies will emanate scent, and you will go to paradise.”

Once on the ground in Mumbai (they arrived by trawler, having killed its crew), the young men’s actions were puppeteered from a control room back in Pakistan. Their handlers had cellphones, computers, television monitors and detailed maps. Ms. Scott-Clark and Mr. Levy are delicately attuned to how technology and terror mingled during this horror show.

Google Earth and a Garmin GPS were used to plan the strikes on Mumbai. Inside the Taj, the frightened guests called, texted and tweeted throughout the attack, often providing their assailants with deadly real-time information. In one remarkable scene, a hostage is taken, and the attackers report his name back to their controllers, who Google him and do an image search.

Here is the author’s account of the conversation that transpired: “ ‘O.K., listen, is he wearing glasses?’ He was. ‘He is balding at the front?’ Umer shouted at Ram: ‘Hold your head straight.’ Umer replied: ‘Yes, yes, he is bald. He’s got a face like a dog.’

Qahafa had found Ram’s online résumé. A top-class hostage. He was pleased.” You await the next wave of terrorists, who will come wearing Google glass.

This story of the taking of the Taj hotel, based on hundreds of interviews, spreads out. The historic hotel, which opened in 1903, was filled with 600 guests and 1,600 employees, and we meet several dozen of them. Among the central characters: the hotel’s general manager, whose wife and sons are trapped in an upstairs room; a footloose young Western couple; an Indian police officer; and an American double agent who helped plan the attacks.

Hurricane Sandy is the biggest Atlantic storm in history, spanning

an area broader than Texas and has caused at

least 50. U.S. deaths. Millions of people in

Northeast U.S. are still struggling to return to normalcy in its wake.

Bloomberg turned down the president’s offer to visit the storm-whipped city, but mentioned that he was “not trying to dis” Obama, who instead planned a stop in New Jersey. In the chief executive’s stead, Cuomo said, the national “Unwatering SWAT Team” was headed to the city.

Tuesday afternoon, the winds that whipped the region were gone and only intermittent rain fell. But Sandy’s legacy of carnage will endure in the memory of New Yorkers for decades.

Unlike last year’s Hurricane Irene, which inflicted less damaged on the city than expected, Sandy delivered on every promise of destruction.

“I can say unequivocally that the MTA last night faced a disaster as devastating as it has ever faced in its history,” declared MTA Chaiman Joseph Lhota. “Sandy wreaked havoc on the entire transportation system.”

Obama suggested that military equipment could be used to pump the standing water out of the subways and tunnels. PATH service was expected to be out for a week to 10 days.

In addition to the swamped subways, six transit garages were shut down by high water and rail yards at 207th St. and 148th St. in Manhattan were flooded.

Yemen leader defiant after injury

Tallinn - European Capital of Culture 2011

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, and in 2011 it will also be the capital of culture for all of Europe. As the European Capital of Culture in 2011, Tallinn will be hosting major international events, bringing people and culture together.

Tallinn lies on a historically unique crossroads by the sea. It is the place where east and west and Northern and Central European cultures meet.

..............................................................................................

.........................................................,,..... Its Old Town forms part of UNESCO's World Heritage. It has grand song celebrations that describe the lasting love for music and quest for freedom of the Estonian people. Global statistics show that people here go to the theatre and read books more than anywhere else in the world.

.....................................

Attractions

Like most cities with an eight-hundred-year-old past, Tallinn is a patchwork of historic areas. The city's pride and joy is without a doubt its Medieval Old Town, but equally enchanting is the Kadriorg district, a throwback to the time when Estonia was ruled by the Russian Tsars. Other areas of Tallinn are perfect for those who want to get a glimpse of Soviet-era life, or just want to spend time in the great outdoors...

A charity concerned about the psychosocial effects of the disaster on children has been working with families who are being housed in temporary shelters.

Save the Children's Ian Wolverton says the charity has set up "child friendly places" for families staying in evacuation centres.

As engineers race to avert a nuclear catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, the government has declared a 20km (12-mile) evacuation zone around it.

Around 450,000 people are staying in temporary shelters in Japan as the massive relief effort continues after Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Fears are growing as engineers race to avert a nuclear catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, 220km (140 miles) from Tokyo.

The organisation said it feared an attack by forces loyal to the country's leader Col Muammar Gaddafi may be imminent.

Government forces say they have captured Ajdabiya, the last town before Benghazi, but the rebels deny this....

......

The ICRC said it had transferred its Benghazi and Ajdabiya staff to the eastern city of Tobruk, from where they will continue to work with conflict victims.

In a statement, the organisation said humanitarian activities in Benghazi would now be carried out by the Libyan Red Crescent, which had been left with food and essential items to cover the needs of 15,000 people for a month.

"We are extremely concerned about what will happen to civilians, the sick and wounded, detainees and others who are entitled to protection in times of conflict," said Simon Brooks, head of the ICRC mission in Libya.

.......................................................................

Reports say they have taken up positions outside Ajdabiya, only 160km (100 miles) from the rebel stronghold.

Tanks, artillery and warplanes have been bombarding Ajdabiya, but there are conflicting reports on whether it has fallen to the government troops.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Benghazi says the situation there is getting more tense by the hour, and the calls for the international community to impose a no-fly zone more desperate.

"In the coming hours we will see a real genocide if the international community does not act quickly," he said on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening, state TV warned residents of Benghazi that they had until midnight (2200 GMT) to abandon rebel locations and arms storage areas, Reuters reports.

................................................................................

Col Gaddafi told Lebanese TV that he did not expect there to be a battle in the city, saying the Libyan people had been helping to oust al-Qaeda elements.

Jalal al-Gallal of the rebels' Transitional National Council in the city said there would be a "massacre" if they did not intervene.

Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya's ambassador to the UN who has defected from the Gaddafi regime, also warned the situation could escalate quickly.

Egyptian police clash with thousands of protesters demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in the capital, Cairo, amid reports of mass internet disruption and arrests of opposition figures.

Yemen

There have been several days of protests in Yemen - the Arab world's most impoverished nation, where nearly half of the population lives on less than $2 a day.

Anger on the streets of Sanaa

Youths and opposition groups have taken to the streets of the capital, Sanaa, and the southern city of Aden demanding the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh - in power for nearly 32 years.

In an effort to defuse the unrest, Mr Saleh announced on 23 January that he had ordered income tax to be halved and instructed the government to control prices of basic commodities. He also denied allegations that he was planning to hand over power to his son, Ahmed.

The government also released 36 people jailed for participating in the unrest, including the prominent human rights activist, Tawakul Karman.

But at the same time, the president has increased the salaries of state employees and armed forces personnel - a step apparently meant to ensure their loyalty - and deployed riot police and soldiers in key areas

28 January 2011

Egypt has many similarities with Tunisia - tough economic conditions, official corruption and little opportunity for its citizens to express their dissatisfaction with the political system. President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has an almost complete monopoly on power, has been in office for three decades and is seeking re-election this autumn.

Protesters are demanding the president steps down

In January, several cases of self-immolation were reported in Egypt, apparent attempts to mimic the actions of the young Tunisian, Mohamed Bouazizi, who set himself on fire in mid-December and died on 4 January, triggering the unrest which ultimately overthrew President Ben Ali.

Then, on 25 January, the deep frustration of ordinary Egyptians spilled over into the streets of Cairo. Protesters - many waving Tunisian as well as Egyptian flags - came out in numbers not seen since the bread riots of the 1970s. Opposition groups issued demands for President Mubarak to resign, and called for an end to poverty, corruption, unemployment and police abuses. Four people died in the clashes, one of them a policeman.

The next day, police again used tear gas against thousands of demonstrators in Cairo, and protesters in Suez set fire to a government building. A policeman and a protester were killed, and the interior ministry said 500 people had been arrested. The government also announced that public gatherings would no longer be tolerated.

The police have been taken unaware by the size and power of the demonstrations, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo.

But change will not come easily in Egypt - the country is about eight times the size of Tunisia, the people are on average less literate and educated, and less internet-savvy. The trade unions are not as powerful, and the powerful security apparatus of Mr Mubarak is well equipped and more experienced at quashing dissent.

Mid-East: Will there be a domino effect?

Related stories

In the wake of the ousting of Tunisia's President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, observers have drawn parallels with other countries in the region.

There is speculation about a possible domino effect similar to the collapse of Communist governments around Eastern Europe in 1989.

In several countries of the Middle East and North Africa, youthful and rapidly growing populations face rising food prices, high unemployment and lack of political representation. Some are also ruled by aging autocrats facing succession issues.

Which are the countries involved, and what is the likelihood of real change?

Hundreds Stuck In Snow After Weather Kills Two

Hundreds of drivers have been stuck for up to 10 hours on snow-hit UK roads after an elderly man found dead at a caravan park became the country's latest weather-related death.

he Scottish Government held an emergency meeting as police said they were doing their best to reach motorists stranded on major routes north of the border.

The M8 westbound between Glasgow and Edinburgh was particularly badly hit, while it was estimated up to 500 vehicles were stuck on the M80 and A80.

A government spokesman said they hoped to have the M8 moving again shortly.

Chief Inspector Stewart Carle, from Strathclyde Police, said every one of the force's available 4x4s were attempting to rescue drivers.

"As soon as one car or lorry becomes stuck, others get stuck behind it," he said.

Then the police and other emergency services are stuck in the same queue."

He added that motorists were advised to stay in their cars.

The latest victim of the freezing conditions, a man in his 70s, was discovered by security guards patrolling the Thorpe Park site in Cleethorpes, northeast Lincolnshire.

The Humberside pensioner's body was found fully-clothed and police said they could not confirm reports he may have lay undiscovered for two days.

A spokesman said the man had not been formally identified and his death was not being treated as suspicious.

It comes after a man died trying to clear snow outside his home in Darlington, County Durham - with the number of recent weather-related deaths now at nine......

"Some families are stuck in their cars, some car batteries are running out. People are totally desperate. There's absolutely coming to help, we're just being left here, stranded."

He added that motorway exits had been blocked by police.

But the latest weather system has been moving south into northern England, where it has been weakening.

Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport were both shut due to the freezing conditions, but Glasgow reopened this afternoon, as did Edinburgh at 6pm.

Dundee, Inverness, Kirkwall and Campbeltown airports in Scotland were also closed earlier in the day, although flights were landing at all except Cambeltown later in the afternoon.

European parliament roof in Strasbourg collapses

Fortunately, members of the European parliament (MEP) were on vacation when 10% of the fake ceiling of the EP collapsed in Strasbourg last Friday.

Images of the rubble on several rows of seats were revealed by StrasTV.com, a French website on the city of Strasbourg, and are now circulating on YouTube with sarcastic comments, such as: ‘This will not help to prevent MEP absenteeism!’

This incident may well be an opportunity for the MEPs and citizens who have been campaigning for the parliament to be solely based in Brussels, instead of having three different seats, in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg. The Oneseat campaign (oneseat.eu) estimates it costs European taxpayers 200 million euros a year to move the parliament’s activities from Brussels to Strasbourg.Plenary sessions should be concentrated in Brussels, but unfortunately we do not have the political majorities in the council of ministers’, says Helga Truepel, a German

MEP who signed the Oneseat petition.

‘For the French presidency of the European

Union, this incident should be an incentive

to reconsider its position and give up

Strasbourg as one of the EP’s seats.’

Over 1.2 million European citizens have

signed the online petition.

According to our sources, MEPs did not

hesitate to privately joke around about

the incident. ‘Perhaps the gods are

sending us a signal that they are displeased

about all the waste of time, money

and energy in maintaining a two-seat

EP,’ said a British MEP, in answer to

a Portuguese MEP who noticed

that ‘Asterix and Obelix were right to worry

the sky might fall on their heads.’

MEPs gather in the EP in Strasbourg

for plenary sessions one week a

month, leaving the building unoccupied

307 days a year. The next session

will take place on 1 September if

the security of the Hemicycle can be assured..

13th December 2010, Minneapolis, USA.As Great Britain partially recovers for the heaviest snow it has seen for many a year ,the USA takes a snow pounding. Heavy snowfell fast and hard yesterday making driving, and getting about in general, difficult.Yesterday huge swathes of the US received a blizzard warning. These included Chicago, the state of Iowa, large parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin and sections of North and South Dakota, Missouri and Michigan. Today the snow has moved on to Canada. Before the snow moved away though it dumped a huge amount of snow. The metro-dome stadium was one casualty. With more than 17 inches of snow resting on the stadium's roof it simply gave in under the weight. Officials had tried to melt the snow by increasing the heat in the stadium but it was to no avail. The roof of the 30 year old stadium began to leak initially but soon collapsed. Thankfully no-one was injured when this happened. The planned major league game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants, has now been moved to Detroit.
